This week, we talk about Supergiant Games’ most recent offering, the fantasy fire Basketball simulator, Pyre.
Nick stated before the recording of this episode that he didn’t want it to bloat into a behemoth like our What Remains of Edith Finch episode did. It’s a fair thing to ask given that he has to edit them. As such, our discussion is mainly centered on the big picture ideas Pyre presents rather than digging down into the nitty gritty character narratives. As such, our discussion of Pyre kind of takes us all over the place.
We manage to weave our discussion from game design theory to sports narratives, to religion, to sports as religion, to political revolution as fermented by sports narratives and back around again. For a game whose base description is fantasy 3-on-3 Basketball with some visual novel stuff in between, it has a lot stuffed in there to unpack. I think we managed to hit most of the highlights.
