October 7, 2013 Eric Swain External Sources Haunted Homes and ‘Gone Home’ This week on the Moving Pixels Podcast, we take a break from the weird and take a trip through the mundane with Gone Home. Strap yourselves in, it’s a long one. Actually, it’s a testament to the game’s density of themes and material that the podcast is only slightly shorter than the game it’s talking about. And on another note, this is the first recording with my new microphone. The difference is immediately apparent. My voice isn’t garbled and it doesn’t suffer any distortion. | more
September 24, 2013 Eric Swain External Sources Syria’s Endgame in ‘Endgame: Syria’ With all the recent refocusing of the news on the Syrian civil war right now I figured now might be a good time to actual play Endgame: Syria, a newsgame app that I downloaded months ago and left sitting idle on my tablet and write about it for PopMatters. This is one of those games Apple refused certification because it dealt with real world issues and where they said the creator should have written a book instead. That logic is maddening, but more importantly it is unhelpful. | more
September 23, 2013 Eric Swain External Sources Kentucky Route Zero: A Game of Mines, Maps and Madness And so, we continue our unofficial, accidental series on indie games in this week’s episode of the Moving Pixels Podcast with Kentucky Route Zero. It was noted in the preshow talk that apparently the recordings have gotten quite longer since I started appearing on the show. That continues here with almost two hours of talk. So, note the length just in case. As for the sound quality on my end, this is becoming a real pain, I tried a new set up for this episode that managed to get the mic right in front of my face the whole time. | more
September 9, 2013 Eric Swain External Sources Inheriting Work in ‘Rogue Legacy’ After a few weeks off the podcast is back with Rogue Legacy. I have to apologize. Starting with the last podcast I started experimenting to try and get my audio sounding better. Changing mic, changing audio settings, changing recording locations. Whichever one I did for this podcast didn’t work too well. You can understand me, but there is a noticeable difference in sound quality between myself and my fellow podcasters. Luckily that should all be fixed now. | more
August 19, 2013 Eric Swain External Sources ’400 Days’ of Moral Quandries, Hungry Zombies, and Terrible Humans I was on another episode of the Moving Pixels Podcast. It’s a lot of fun to be on a podcast you know you don’t have to edit afterwords. This time I actually got to be on an episode where we talked about The Walking Dead. I missed last year’s series of podcasts. I really liked The Walking Dead DLC 400 Days. I think it might be one of my favorite episodes of the whole series. Part of that I think has been my recent interest in short stories. | more
July 29, 2013 Eric Swain External Sources There’s a Little Killer Podcast in All of Us I was on the Moving Pixels Podcast again. This time to talk about an older game, namely Suda 51′s magnum opus: Killer 7. It’s a weird game and a difficult one. I had a really busy week and didn’t get around to playing it until the day of the podcast and despite many hours could only get through the first two full levels. I am going to finish it, because it’s just one of those games that demands to be played. On a side note, if anyone can identify why my audio is so horrible on these podcasts, I’d be very appreciative. | more
July 23, 2013 Eric Swain Uncategorized ‘The Last of Us’ is Emotionally Manipulative Last week, The Last of Us Moving Pixels podcast was published. I was on it and the lone dissenter as we worked are way through examining the game. I found that I was able to properly explain my position on the game and I’m pretty sure I sound like I’m simply babbling. I knew that much from the recording session. So, I decided to spend my next column doing just that, explain myself and where I feel The Last of Us fell short. I spent a long time crafting that post and editing it. | more
April 20, 2013 Eric Swain External Sources Deirdra Kiai Podcast Interview Episode 12 of the CDC podcast went live. I know it was promised back in March, but it was delayed due to the hell that misbegotten excuse for an audio file put me through. I had to edit the thing three times. Originally, I had planned to release it last year in conjunction with Deirdra Kiai’s Indigogo for her newest game. That fell through due to editing problems which caused me to start all over again. So, I’m editing it for release in the second week of March. | more
March 18, 2013 Eric Swain External Sources The Podcast That Burns At 100 Billion Degrees I appeared on another episode of the Moving Pixels Podcast to discuss the indie game Little Inferno. I don’t know what to really think of the game and spend most of my time trying to parse it out in real time with my fellow podcasters. It’s another game I’m very happy that it exists and I enjoyed my time with it, but I don’t know what to ultimately say about it in any final word sort of way. It feels like a lot of half-finished ideas and sentiments put together centering on the Little Inferno Entertainment Fireplace. | more
January 2, 2013 Eric Swain External Sources Critical Distance 2012 End of Year Extravaganza For the third year in a row, I decided not to enjoy my winter break with video games, but drive myself to exhaustion doing the Critical Distance end of year projects. Episode 11 of the CDC Podcast – The Talking Dead and the 2012 This Year In Video Game Blogging round up. Both did not go as smoothly as planned. The CDC podcast this time around was longer than any I’ve done before. Even by cutting the cast down to only 4 people (Myself, Kris, Alan and Ian) it still ended up longer than last year. | more
