In my last PopMatters post I wrote about how humans view AI, this time I reverse the position and explore how AI views us in The Fall.
I had some idea about where I was going with this as I was writing it. In fact, it would have gone up two weeks earlier, but I had to rewrite a majority of it so that many of the new insights that I gleened during the process of logically thinking through each character would fit into a more nuanced and detailed thesis that had emerged.
If we fear Artificial Intelligence so much when its out of our control, then what does artificial intelligence think of us when in our control? And what does Artificial Intelligence reveal about us when it becomes self-aware?
I love works like this. The questions aren’t asked, merely suggested in the background haze of its underlying themes but then answers them anyway. I loved The Fall when it came time to list my games of 2014, but actually buckling down to write about it has only made me appreciate it more.
I should say, this is the last piece of this length and depth of mine that will appear on PopMatters. I have been informed that if I submit something this long again, it will simply be ignored. I understand that, but it’s kind of torn at me. Before I was sent that message, I felt I hadn’t done enough to explore the idea and instead left it hanging as a result of rushing the conclusions. LeSigh.
