April 14, 2011 Eric Swain Game Issues, Recent Posts A Reader’s Manifesto and why it could be A Gamer’s Manifesto I finished a book a little while ago entitled A Reader’s Manifesto: An Attack on the Growing Pretentiousness in American Literary Prose and I loved it. I loved it so much that I’ve started calling it my little black book. It’s a long form literary critique using examples from numerous books, both-what the author calls-good and bad. It’s not a dry academic stuffy read. It is a fast, concise to the point essay about a specific topic that is not a high-minded far away abstract topic, but about book reviews, reviews people readers rely on to tell them what is good. | more
April 4, 2011 Eric Swain Recent Posts, Thoughts Laptop Fluff Since this weekend was an overall bust with unexpected work hours throwing off a major project undertaking I had planned. However despite that, this has been a really great week for me. Why? Because my new laptop came. And since I have been taking on too much heavy lifting when it comes to all these what I’m calling projects I’ve been starting. (I call them projects because while the end result may just be an essay or a podcast, but the amount of work and research that goes into it. | more
March 29, 2011 Eric Swain Critical Responses, Recent Posts A Comment on Video Games as a Medium (Because Open ID blog comment systems are crap and for some reason never want me to comment regardless of what blog it is, this time I think because the comment was too long, and because I felt the need to say this, I’m posting it here and hoping to post the link in the comments instead. And for those of you absolutely sick of the ‘are games art’ debate, not everyone has had this debate and if we who have gone through this question and hammered out the answer do not take our time to educate or at least inform the debate then we really are Ivory Tower wankers. | more
March 1, 2011 Eric Swain External Sources, Recent Posts Another Podcast, Another TWIVGB It seems to be a theme for this year. I've done more on other people's sites than I've done on my own. This continues to be true. Over a week ago I was invited to do the Chronoludic podcast with Chris Green, Mike Dunbar and Seb Wupper. The topic at hand was the question 'what is a game worth?' The focus of this particular question was the issue of economics and us as game purchasers. WE didn't reach any groundbreaking conclusions or earth-shattering revelations. | more
February 11, 2011 Eric Swain External Sources, Recent Posts My Latest Work at Critical Distance While I haven't been updating my own blog much lately it's partly because I've been busying myself with other things. I've worked at finding a new job. I lost or rather finished my other part time, contract work last month. I've also been hurriedly trying to get my RSS feed back under control. The week I spent away from it (I'll tell you why later on) even though it was the week between Christmas and New Years it didn't slow anybody down when it came to posting. | more
January 14, 2011 Eric Swain Game Essays, Recent Posts Enslaved: Odyssey to the West’s Thematic Failure *Spoilers for Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Heavenly Sword, Bioshock and Braid* Ninja Theory is a studio I really want to like. I really do. They hold a philosophy towards creating games, AAA games at that, I would love to see more of. They create a work and let it stand for itself. There is no extra tie in, no comic book spin offs, and more notable, no sequels. Before modern Hollywood took over (thanks in part to Star Wars and Jaws) nothing needed a sequel. A work stood or failed on it's own merits and not as a part of a whole. | more
December 31, 2010 Eric Swain Game Issues, Recent Posts TGC 2010 Game of the Year So, I'm leaving this to last possible moment this year...again. But I have a better excuse than last time of not being able to decide. This time it's because my time has been filled with other projects, the most notable, or at least the one that has been revealed was the rebirth of the Critical Distance podcast. Suffice to say I also haven't played all that many games from this year. I missed out on most if not all of the major releases and most of the secondary releases. | more
December 31, 2010 Eric Swain Game Issues, Recent Posts State of the Blog ’10 It's been a little over two year since I started The Game Critique. In the past year I wrote fewer posts than before, (only 24 this year) but they definitely have gone up in quality and length. Looking at the posts that I have planned and those that are half finished I find that I may be entering a phase of long form essays. I think and hope I finally may have found my niche and expertise in the critical community that I've long been searching in the dark for. This year was also the year I finally graduated college. | more
December 29, 2010 Eric Swain External Sources, Recent Posts CDC Podcast Episode 6 is Up A little over a week and a half ago I asked TWIVGB compatriots Ben Abraham and Ian Miles Cheong if they wanted to join me in restarting the CDC podcast series. I've wanted to do another ever since I last appeared on episode 3. I love talking to intelligent people, intelligently about... well anything really, but the subject here is video games. Given the time of year, I figured it was only fitting that we discuss the year in a retrospective of events, stories and games. I knew the three of us wouldn't be enough. | more
December 17, 2010 Eric Swain External Sources, Recent Posts Indie Game Spotlight – One Chance (Indie Game Spotlight is an irregular feature, trying to be a regular feature that I haven't done for almost a year and finally got back to. I highlight and talk about an indie game as opposed to the AAA titles that usually dominate the critical conversation.) One Chance is a flash game over at Newgrounds that you must play, but a note before you do. The title is more than that; it is a warning of what you are about to play. You have only one chance to play this game. There are no restarts or replays. | more
