Critical Distance Confab – Minisode 03 – B-grade Games

This month’s minisode comes a few days early because the last day of the month is a Sunday and it’s going to be rather jam packed with content anyway.

I would like to thank Aevee Bee for agreeing to come on the show on such short notice. It was a really good fit. See, as I have mentioned before, I haven’t a whole lot of rules on how the minisodes operate. As time goes on, I’m sure I’ll implement them when problems arise. So far, the rules as they are, are the games must have little to no criticism and no repeats. I leave the material as free flowing as I can because I feel the space is so wide open that I don’t know where this project can take us. As such I never really have thought of a theme for these minisodes.

Kindly enough, Aevee Bee brought one with her when we recorded. Previously, it was just bringing three games no one has talked about and we’ll tease out a connective tissue on the fly. Here, Aevee Bee had a theme behind her choices, that of B-grade games. She brought with her three “AAA” games, or rather games that are on console with a disc pressing. It’s as good a definition for AAA as anything else. Her games and her exhortations of them highlighted the broad nature of what doesn’t get talked about and why.

I mentioned in the before show banter that she now holds the record for “biggest game” recommended. And I was worried I might hold that title undermining the practice.1 But I think it worked out. I don’t know if I’ll be doing theme minisodes going forward. While it can bring forth a creativity in choosing subject matter, it can also be limiting on a guest co-host.

I did put some thought into the idea of what themes I would do if I were going to do them and the one that came immediately to mind was the idea of older games that never really got their critical due. Say, anything before the year 2000. Maybe 1990, if I was feeling really adventurous. But that is for another time.

  1. I worry kind of a lot about this sort of minor thing if it isn’t obvious. ↩︎
