I was going to do a video essay on "games & art" some time ago as a follow up to this http://parallaxcg.blogspot.com/2009/12/videogames-tentpole-film.html but I think games which think out of the box come out only every once in a while. I think the current hardware makes interesting endeavors far more doable however.

Nice review. I hadn't planned on reading this book since what I've seen of it seemed to be about the potential of videogames to be art which is something I'm not really interested in (I'm much more interested in what people are doing with games than mythical "potential") but I might have to see if I can get a copy of it now.

I think the question of audience is an important one for videogame books. I've read too many books by game studies people who's academic articles I've liked but had written books aimed at more of a mainstream audience. That's great for general audiences but disappointing for someone who doesn't need so much information frontloaded.

However, I do think anything that gets the average person beyond "those games are ruining our children" or the opposition reaction, "Don't read so much into them. They are just games" and starts to think more deeply about gaming is a good thing.
